The Armenian government has proposed removing the historic round terminal at Zvartnots Airport from the state list of Yerevan’s immovable historical and cultural monuments, according to Hetq. The Ministry of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure has prepared the corresponding proposal.

The ministry argues that the landmark status is an obstacle to the reconstruction and modernization of the airport complex. The building only received protected status on August 14, 2025, following years of appeals from architects and the public.

Authorities say the plan is not about demolition but about modernizing and integrating the old terminal into the airport’s updated infrastructure. However, once removed from the landmark list, the building loses its legal protection. The airport’s concessionaire has previously considered dismantling it.

The proposal is part of a broader master plan for Zvartnots, which envisions around $425 million in investment by the end of 2033, increasing boarding gates from 6 to 16 and expanding passenger and security infrastructure.
